Bleak Humor
From National Lampoon magazine, and in the first time that the two terms have been used together, the Wall Street Journal declares "Semper fi, Miss Manners!"

Today
It's very quiet around the office today, only half of the staff showed up. Quiet in the building as well. My feelings on that score are very mixed and too impolite to be published here.

Pre-9/11
All the restaurants are full and most people (self included) are tanking up on their favorite comfort foods. I don't think most people even realize the link between their eating binge and the low grade anxiety that is hovering over the city.

Interesting
THIS, a blog about homelessness, is different and interesting; a nice change from the either a) political or b) neurotically personal blogs on the web.

Disappointment
I participated in a little project called "Book Crossing." The premise is that you take a book and leave it out somewhere where anyone can find it. Inside (or on the cover) is a note identifying it as part of a literacy project encouraging the finder to log the found book into the book crossing website, read it (or not) and then release it back into the wild. Sort of a fun way to encourage people to read and see how books migrate and spread. Besides, who couldn't benefit from a free book and a little something odd to spice up their day?

Both of my books (too highbrow, I suspect) have gone nowhere. If you're interested in participating, click on the link above or here. I tried signing up for the 1000 Journals project but those things are impossible to get a hold of, and it's almost criminal to watch how careless and irresponsible people can be with a journal into which dozens of people have invested countless hours of painstaking creativity.

Gym Update
For my last workout, I almost fainted and/or puked. Here's hoping tonight's session is a tad less intense.

Crickets are infiltrating the basement through a hole that has yet to be located. Major is beside herself with joy and runs downstairs repeatedly to continually hunt for new "intruders." If only she would swallow the crickets she eats and dismembers instead of leaving a sticky trail of body parts sequestered in various folds of the carpet.

Card-Carrying
I'm now officially equipped with both NRA and ACLU membership cards. I keep them together in my wallet in a weird sort of karmic balancing act. As soon as I can get to K*nko's, I'll scan them in for posterity along with the paper targets from my M-16 class.

The Nonclave
I recently went to what could basically be described as a big, decadent party in the woods that brought together people and friends from all over the US who I haven't seen in a very long time (and despite my driving fixation, am unlikely to again.) To minimize the drama I'll keep the description short and vague. While there, I realized that I'm the type of person that likes to have a good time AND has a better time if the people around me are enjoying themselves as well. Unfortunately there were several people present who were there to have a good time by using everyone around them as a means to that end; the needs and feelings of others be damned.

Only one time before in my life have I ever been treated as a piece of furniture and I was as angry about it then as I am about it now. My anger (more on this later) has gotten so out of control that it's spilling out onto my relationships (or what I thought were relationships) with other people. I'm going to have to skip at least one wedding in order to avoid a full-out Jerry Springer-esq scene.

Suffice it to say that I left the party, several "friends" lighter than when I walked in. I had more fun taking an NRA M-16 training class that morning than I did at the nonclave. (And the two will most definitely not be mixed!)

Back to the anger issue. I was in a left-turn lane at a traffic light recently with the windows down on my car and the person in front of me was so distracted that they were late entering the intersection and left me stranded there. Without thinking, I cursed ("G*d, damn it!"), so loudly that it reverberated off the windows of the bank and car dealership on opposite sides of the street, bounced to the far side of the intersection and caused pedestrians at all four corners to stop and look around for the source.

People at work have suggested stress management classes.

For Caroline
I constantly tease her about her "Barbie-esq" life. Here is the same drama taken to whole new level. I found the Catwoman costume particularly striking.

Something Lite
