Day by Day Cartoon
I get a bit of referral traffic from the on-line cartoon "Day by Day". It was very sweet of the author, Chris Muir, to link to me as my blog doesn't offer any of the typical fare that might interest his readers. So if you happen to be reading this and haven't stopped by to take a look, I highly recommend Muir's work; the Doonsbury of our times.
Stop And Smell The Roses
I can be accused of many things, but not stopping to smell the roses is not one of them. It's a beautiful spring day here in the nation's Capitol and for lunch I made a detour to walk around the grounds of the Hill, sampling the flowers, petal strewn paths and fountains. It's always such a disappointment when visiting other cities, very few can really compare to DC on a good day. (Paris and NYC are obvious exceptions.)
By the time I had finished lunch at Union Station (teriyaki chicken, mixed vegetables and rice) the weather had turned sour - overcast and windy - which was fine by me because the airborne pollen was so thick it was like walking through a rainstorm. I can't imagine what it must be like to have allergies and thank G-d for sparing me that particular ill. But it was (to use the vernacular) cool as sh*t to see that much pollen whizzing by; great big dollops of the stuff. My leg strength for bike riding is increasing rapidly and I'm thankful for that. I'm not quite ready for something as radical as riding my bike to and from work, but the few inclines I have to navigate don't take the wind out of me as much. Last night was an interesting one at the gym. My "spotter" (he's read my blog and laughs at being called "the staff") tried to get me a spot on one of the back machines. The alpha-in-residence on the machine cooly dismissed him and refused to let us work in. The alpha-in-residence then proceeded to throw around a whole bunch of ego weight with eye-poppingly bad form. Got quite the chuckle out of that. I'm a big fan of properly thrown attitude, but you have to have something to back it up...and this guy clearly didn't. Alpha-in-residence was sporting a shaved dome - the latest affectation for the balding set. I can't wait for this particular trend to go out of style so the testosterone-poisoned receding hairline class can walk in the shade of my full head of luxurious wavy hair. Did I mention that I was up to 2:30 Monday morning doing chores? It felt gooooooood. No xtreme biking down mud-covered mountain trails for me. Satisfaction comes at the end of a broom.
