  I still have the Ireland updates to write (I know, I know!) but in the meantime, here's a small detail that I was finally able to track down. Many of the celtic cross tombstones in Ireland were inscribed with the letters "IHS" - especially over a heart. Now back when I was a really good Catholic (aka - daily parochial school) I might have known what that meant, but as a Mass-and-confession Catholic, I was clueless. Here are the various meanings: in Greek, IHS stands for Iota-Eta-Sigma, the first three letters in the name of Jesus - "IHCOYC"; in the Greek alphabet the C and S are variants; in Latin, IHS stands for "In Hoc Sanctis" which means "in this place sacred"; in English it can stand for "in His service" or "I have suffered."

More than you wanted to know, but my life is made up of tracking down and solving these little mysteries. It's like Sherlock Holmes but without the glamour or a book deal (or sidekick.)
